Tips for ACT! 2.0 Users
-----------------------
This document is intended for people who previously used ACT! 2.0
and are upgrading to ACT! 3.0.
This document is divided into two sections. The first section lists
tips for ACT! 2.0 users who are looking for similar functions in
ACT! 3.0. The second section lists the ACT! 2.0 menu commands by their
functions and shows the equivalent menu commands in ACT! 3.0.
SECTION ONE
-----------
The following is a list of tips for ACT! 2.0 users that describe
equivalent functions in ACT! 3.0.
* In ACT! 2.0, you clicked on an activity in the calendar to go to the
linked contact. In ACT! 3.0, select the activity, click the right
mouse button, then choose Go To Contact from the shortcut menu.
* To create a lookup in ACT! 2.0, you clicked the Lookup button at the
bottom of the Calendar or Task List dialog box. In ACT! 3.0, click
the Lookup button on the toolbar, or choose the Lookup command from
the shortcut menu.
* To filter an activity in ACT! 2.0, you made selections directly on
the Calendar or Task List dialog box. In ACT! 3.0, click the Filter
button on the toolbar, or choose the Filter command from the
shortcut menu.
* To narrow down the current lookup of contacts in ACT! 2.0, you used
the Tag and Untag commands on the Contact List. In ACT! 3.0, use the
Omit Selected and Lookup Selected commands to perform the same
functions. To use these commands, select the required contacts in
the Contact List, click the right mouse button, then choose the
command from the shortcut menu.
* In ACT! 2.0, you could switch layouts using the View > Layout
command. In ACT! 3.0, use the layout drop-down list at the bottom of
the Contact window to switch layouts. You can still use F6 to switch
to the previous layout.
* In ACT! 2.0, you could access additional user fields by switching
layouts. In ACT! 3.0, you can still switch layouts, or you can use
the tabs at the bottom of the default contact and group layouts to
view all your fields.
* In ACT! 2.0, you could create general queries using the Lookup >
Other command. In ACT! 3.0, use the Lookup > By Example command.
* The Mobile Link add-in for ACT! 2.0 provided database
synchronization. These functions are now integrated into ACT! 3.0,
and are available using the File > Synchronize command.
* ACT! 2.0 supported only the ACT! word processor. ACT! 3.0 continues
to support the ACT! word processor, and adds support for both
Microsoft Word and WordPerfect.
* To open the Calendar, Task List, and other views in ACT! 2.0, you
clicked a button on the toolbar. In ACT! 3.0, you can move to a
different ACT! window by clicking one of the eight buttons in the
lower-right corner of the Contact window.
* To refresh your list of e-mail messages in ACT! 2.0, you held down
the Shift key and clicked the sort arrow. In ACT! 3.0, the Refresh
List command is located on the shortcut menu in the E-mail window.
Click the right mouse button anywhere in the list of messages, then
choose Refresh List from the shortcut menu.
* Shortcut keys provide quick access to commands. In ACT! 2.0, the
shortcut keys were fixed. In ACT! 3.0, you can modify existing
ACT! shortcut keys or add new shortcut keys. Use the Tools >
Customize command, then click the Keyboard tab.
* To modify the CompuServe session settings in ACT! 2.0, you held
down the Shift key while you connected to CompuServe. In ACT! 3.0,
the Modify Session Settings command is located on the shortcut
menu. Click the right mouse button over the CompuServe Inbox
folder, then choose Modify Session Settings from the shortcut menu.
* To delete history items in ACT! 2.0, you selected the items in the
history list, then clicked the Remove button at the bottom of the
screen. In ACT! 3.0, select the history or note you want to delete,
click the right mouse button, then choose Delete from the shortcut
menu.
* The pop-up menus for user fields in ACT! 2.0 are now drop-down
lists in ACT! 3.0. Click in a field with a drop-down list
(indicated by a drop-down arrow), then choose an entry from the
list. You can still use F2 to display the Edit List dialog box.
* To customize your user fields in ACT! 2.0, you used the Edit >
Field Attributes command. In ACT! 3.0, use the Edit > Define Fields
command.
* In ACT! 2.0, you could change the attributes of the existing user
fields. In ACT! 3.0, you can now add new fields to a contact or
group database. First, create a new field using the Edit > Define
Fields command. Then add the new field to your layout using the
Tools > Design Layouts command.
* In ACT! 2.0, you could schedule activities for yourself only. In
ACT! 3.0, you can also schedule activities for other users. Use
the Scheduling for Another User group box in the Select Contacts
dialog box.
* In ACT! 2.0, you could use the Lookup commands to find contacts
based on a single search criterion. In ACT! 3.0, you can use the
Narrow Lookup option in the Lookup dialog box to refine your set
of contacts and eliminate contacts who do not match these criteria.
* In ACT! 2.0, you could send a fax from the ACT! word processor
using the File > Print command. In ACT! 3.0, you can still send a
fax using File > Print, or you can send a fax faster using the
File > Send > Fax command. If you are using Microsoft Word or
WordPerfect, use the File > Send Fax Using ACT! command.
